Manchester City’s pursuit of Matheus Nunes continues as they seek to strengthen their midfield, having had a £47 million bid turned down by Wolves last week.
Despite Wolves valuing Nunes at around £60 million, the Brazilian midfielder’s refusal to report to the training ground on Sunday and Monday has led to disciplinary action.
Nunes, who joined Wolves in a club-record £42 million deal from Sporting last summer, is contracted until 2027, with the possibility of an additional year. Wolves are steadfast in their stance, not willing to entertain his departure unless their valuation is met.
City, in need of a creative midfielder following Kevin De Bruyne’s hamstring injury sustained in the season’s opening game, are expected to return with an improved offer for Nunes prior to the transfer deadline on Friday.
Pep Guardiola’s endorsement of Nunes has been long-standing, with the City manager having described him as “one of the best players in the world today” after a Champions League encounter against Sporting in February of the previous year. Nunes later joined Wolves at the end of that season, displaying glimpses of the exceptional talent that had captured Guardiola’s attention. A sensational goal against Chelsea in April earned him a spot on the Premier League’s goal of the season shortlist.
Although this strike remains Nunes’ only Premier League goal, City’s interest in him remains intriguing. Despite showcasing moments of brilliance, his tenure at Wolves has been characterized by a struggle to consistently harness his full potential, much like the spectacular goal that offers a glimpse into his capabilities.
