Sevilla have announced that they have appointed Diego Alonso as their new head coach.
Sevilla FC has officially announced the appointment of Diego Alonso as their new head coach. The contract has been secured until the culmination of the current season.
Alonso has assumed the role, succeeding José Luis Mendilibar, who, despite securing the Europa League title in May, delivered poor results at the outset of the 2023/2024 season.
Diego Alonso previously served as part of the Uruguayan national team’s coaching staff. However, as a footballer, he graced Spanish clubs such as Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Racing, Malaga, and Murcia with his presence.
Mendilibar helped Sevilla climb out of the relegation zone last season and win the Europa League final against AS Roma but they have struggled this term and are a lowly 14th in La Liga.
“Sevilla FC and Diego Alonso have reached an agreement for the Uruguayan to become the Blanquirrojo’s new coach until the end of the current season,” the club said in a statement.
The experienced Alonso has managed several Latin American teams hence a perfect fit for the new role.
Diego Alonso boasts extensive managerial experience, having overseen several Latin American teams, including Penarol, Olimpia in the Uruguayan top-flight league, as well as Pachuca and Monterrey in the Mexican league.
