Wayne Rooney to be the new manager of Birmingham City

Birmingham City has officially announced Wayne Rooney as their new manager, securing his services on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

The former Manchester United and England striker, who recently left his position as head coach of DC United by mutual agreement after missing the MLS Cup play-offs, has quickly transitioned to his new role at Birmingham.

Birmingham initiated discussions with the 37-year-old immediately after parting ways with manager John Eustace, even though the club was sitting in a respectable sixth place in the Championship, following two consecutive victories.

Rooney will have a strong support team, including his former England teammate Ashley Cole, who is currently the assistant coach for England’s U21s. Additionally, John O’Shea, the assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland men’s national team, and familiar faces from his DC United tenure, Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth, will back him. Maik Taylor will continue as the goalkeeper coach.

Both Cole and O’Shea will retain their coaching responsibilities with their respective national teams.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Rooney, who has previous management experience with Derby County, remarked, “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City Football Club at such an exciting time. It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realizing their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected.”

“My job is to elevate the club to the next level and I can’t wait to get started. I know what the expectations are and our job is to deliver.”
