Virgil van Dijk scores for a win over Greece

Virgil van Dijk scored his first international goal since September 2022.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk played a pivotal role by scoring a penalty in the 93rd minute, securing a crucial victory for the Netherlands in their Euro 2024 qualifying match against Greece.

Van Dijk calmly converted the penalty after Denzel Dumfries was fouled inside the box, propelling his team to the second position in Group B standings. Greece’s coach, Gus Poyet, received a red card for his vehement protests during the game.

Although the Netherlands and Greece share the same number of points in the group (third place), the Dutch team holds the advantage in head-to-head matchups, having beaten Greece twice.

The Dutch national team now has an opportunity to secure their place in the next summer’s tournament in Germany. If they win their upcoming matches against the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar, they are guaranteed to qualify, trailing only behind France, who have already secured their spot from the group.

In contrast, Greece has just one remaining match, which will be played at home against France.
