Newcastle experienced their first Champions League defeat this season, losing 1-0 at home to Borussia Dortmund, which has significantly opened up Group F.
After their previous impressive 4-1 victory against French champions Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park, Newcastle was brought back to reality by Dortmund, marking their first loss in nine matches. Felix Nmecha’s goal just before half-time proved decisive, securing Dortmund’s first victory in this season’s Champions League.
Callum Wilson, who came on for the injured Alexander Isak after only 15 minutes, had an excellent opportunity in the second half to level the score, but Gregor Kobel’s superb save denied him. Newcastle was unfortunate as they hit the woodwork twice late in the game: Wilson’s header from a free-kick struck the crossbar, and Anthony Gordon’s stoppage-time effort rebounded off the bar.
Eddie Howe’s team, which started the evening as the group leaders, has now slipped to third place behind Dortmund, while PSG leads the group with six points following their convincing 3-0 home victory over AC Milan. The Magpies face challenging away fixtures against Dortmund and PSG next month as they strive to progress to the knockout stages.
