In a tense situation that has captured global attention, the father of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz, Luis Manuel Diaz, who was kidnapped in Colombia, is now promised to be released ‘as soon as possible’ by the rebel group holding him.
This incident unfolded when Luis Manuel Diaz and his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, were seized by armed men on motorbikes at a petrol station in Barrancas, near the border with Venezuela. The Colombian government has identified the kidnappers as the National Liberation Army (ELN), a guerrilla group. Negotiations are currently underway with these left-wing rebels, led by Otty Patino, who is at the forefront of peace talks.
Mr. Patino made a strong statement, saying, ‘We demand that the ELN releases immediately Mr. Luis Manuel Diaz, and we say as of now that they are entirely responsible for securing his life and integrity.’ Meanwhile, the situation has provoked a heartfelt plea from the Liverpool winger and Colombian international, Luis Diaz himself, who took to social media to beseech his father’s captors for his release. A vigil was organized, attended by Luis Diaz’s mother, uncle, and other relatives, all fervently calling for the release of their loved one.
Special forces have been deployed to search for Mr. Diaz, with air and land patrols covering the mountainous region along the Colombia-Venezuela border. Authorities, including Colombia’s police director, have pledged to employ every resource available to locate him. There remains, however, a haunting possibility that Mr. Diaz may have been smuggled across the border, placing him beyond the reach of Colombian authorities.
In the quest to locate Mr. Diaz, a reward worth $48,000 (£39,000) has been offered for any information that can aid the police in their search. The kidnapping incident has cast a shadow over the delicate peace negotiations between the ELN and the Colombian government, which resumed last year with the aim of ending the group’s involvement in a 60-year conflict that has resulted in the loss of at least 450,000 lives. These peace talks include a six-month ceasefire that was established in August.
The seriousness of this incident is emphasized by Colombia’s interior minister, Luis Fernando Velasco, who has described it as a ‘violation of the ceasefire’ and a severe threat to the ongoing peace process. Otty Patino of the peace talks adds that ‘we remind the ELN that kidnapping is criminal, violates international humanitarian law, and that its duty in building the peace process is not just to stop kidnapping but to eliminate it forever.’ It’s worth noting that the ELN sustains its activities through funding derived from kidnapping, extortion, and drug trafficking.
Luis Diaz, who made a high-profile move to Liverpool last year in a £55 million deal, is regarded as one of the most talented players in the Colombian national squad. His absence from Liverpool’s recent match against Nottingham Forest did not go unnoticed, as his teammates, led by Diogo Jota, expressed their solidarity by holding up a shirt in support of Diaz. As this harrowing situation continues to unfold, it remains a matter of global concern, with implications for ongoing peace efforts in the region.
