Mikel Arteta is facing a charge from the Football Association following his comments after Arsenal’s defeat to Newcastle.
The Gunners’ manager criticized the VAR decision regarding Anthony Gordon’s goal, branding it “an absolute disgrace.” The FA alleges that Arteta’s remarks constitute misconduct, deeming them insulting towards match officials, detrimental to the game, and bringing the game into disrepute.

After a thorough VAR check on various aspects of the goal, Arteta expressed his frustration, stating, “You have to talk about how the hell did this goal stand up? Incredible. I feel embarrassed.”
“I have to now come in here and try to defend the club and please ask for help because it’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed. An absolute disgrace.”
The day after the incident, Arsenal released a statement expressing full support for Mikel Arteta’s comments. The club asserted that the Premier League, being the best in the world, deserves better officiating standards.
The statement called on PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) to urgently address the officiating standard and shift focus towards actions that move beyond retrospective analysis, attempted explanations, and apologies.
Arteta has until Tuesday to provide a response to the charge.
