In their first game without Jose Mourinho since he was fired by the Serie A club earlier this week, Roma fans overflowed with praise for the Portuguese manager.
Mourinho appeared devastated to have been sacked by the Italian giants after two and a half years in the country’s capital, during which he led the team to European glory.
Those in the stands held up banners and images of the former manager as Roma won their first league game since December 23, thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Lorenzo Pellegrini, 2-1.
During the game, a big banner was constructed to honor Mourinho’s stint at the club, which read, “Memories don’t have contracts.
“The smiles you gave us and everything you stood up for our Romanismo will always be respected. Thanks, Mister!’ ‘You defended us against everything and everyone.
“Roma doesn’t forget. Thank you, Mr. Jose!’ ‘The only one to defend us, the last one to surrender.
Mourinho’s tenure at the club was marked by both highs and lows, with their victory in the Europa Conference League in 2022 ranking among Roma’s finest triumphs.
He also led them to the Europa League final last season, where they were eliminated by Sevilla on penalties.
Daniele De Rossi, Roma’s iconic midfielder, was appointed interim manager until the end of the season.
