West Ham agrees on loan deal for Kalvin Phillips

West Ham and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the loan transfer of Kalvin Phillips, the English midfielder, until the end of the season.

In July 2022, when he joined City from Leeds in a £45m deal, Phillips signed a six-year contract. However, he has struggled to make an impact under Pep Guardiola and has only been given two starts this season across all competitions.

Phillips is attracting interest from Juventus as well but it seems likely that he will undergo a medical examination in London later this week. Personal terms are not expected to be problematic since West Ham will cover Phillips’ salary during his loan spell and there will also be an option for them to make the move permanent.

Several clubs have shown interest in signing him on loan but City’s high demands for a substantial fee have discouraged clubs like Newcastle from pursuing him.

Phillips remains part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad and is returning to the UK today along with the rest of the City squad after their warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi.

The temporary acquisition of Phillips comes as good news for Hammers manager David Moyes who has been eager to bolster his squad due to multiple injuries weakening it.

In the meantime, Phillips, who has only been a starter for two matches in English football’s highest division within the last year and a half, is probably going to see this as a chance to display his skills before the upcoming European Championship in Germany.
