Lisandro Martinez was forced off in the second half of Man Utd’s 3-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, February 4.
The defender suffered injury after tangling with Vladimir Coufal, with Erik ten Hag saying it was a “personal disaster”. Martinez only returned from a long-term foot injury in January.
Martinez initially tried to play on after the incident but soon pulled up again before trudging off the pitch, and United confirmed the nature of the injury in a statement yesterday evening.
A Man Utd statement said: “Lisandro Martinez has sustained an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his knee and is expected to be out of action for at least eight weeks.
“The Argentine defender left the field in the 71st minute of our 3-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
“We all wish Licha a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch later in the season.”
United have a number of options to replace Martinez after Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw all returned to the squad in recent games. Veteran Jonny Evans is a naturally left-sided center-back who can also step in.
