Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, expressed his determination to continue adding to the club’s impressive history before his departure at the end of the season.
However, even by Klopp’s own high standards, this victory in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea presented an unlikely and remarkable story.
Heading into the match against Chelsea’s highly valued squad, Liverpool faced a setback with several key players absent from their lineup. The team-sheet revealed that Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez joined a growing list of injured players which already included Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones.

Against all odds and defying expectations based on logic alone, Klopp celebrated yet another significant win for Liverpool. He displayed bravery by calling upon youngsters from Liverpool’s academy to participate in their first trophy lift as part of what could potentially be a four-trophy triumph. The win was ultimately secured by Virgil van Dijk’s header two minutes before the end of extra time.
While much attention will be given to Chelsea’s missed opportunity and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville branding them “billion-pound bottle jobs,” credit must be given where it is due – to Jurgen Klopp and his resilient Liverpool side.
The manager faced criticism from onlookers after comparing the recent comeback victory against Luton Town to the iconic Champions League win over Barcelona. However, he has every right to reflect and take pride in this truly extraordinary triumph at Wembley.
Chelsea, much to their disappointment, will likely never get a better opportunity to avenge their losses in the FA Cup and League Cup finals against Liverpool in 2022. Yet again, Klopp’s story ended with familiar scenes of celebration in red.
It is difficult to quantify just how much Liverpool will miss Klopp when he departs at the end of the season. But one thing is certain: no matter who takes his place, they will have big shoes to fill and a significant void left behind.
