Despite facing criticism this season, West Ham boss David Moyes’ impact on Jarrod Bowen is undeniable and appreciated by even the most disgruntled Hammers fan.
Bowen, who typically plays in wide positions, was deployed as a striker by Moyes earlier in the campaign. This tactical change has proven successful, with Bowen scoring 14 goals – his highest tally in the Premier League to date. Notably, he achieved his first career hat-trick during a 4-2 victory against Brentford on Monday.

The timing of Bowen’s impressive performance could not have been better for both him and his manager. Following an embarrassing 6-0 defeat at home to Arsenal on February 11th and a subsequent 2-0 loss against Nottingham Forest six days later, pressure had been mounting on Moyes. However, Bowen’s exceptional display served as a testament to Moyes’ faith in him and eased some of that pressure.
Thomas Frank, Brentford’s manager, described Bowen as “unplayable” after Monday’s match. This praise undoubtedly adds weight to Bowen’s chances of being considered for England’s squad for this summer’s European Championship in Germany. Gareth Southgate will be closely monitoring players’ performances as he finalizes his selection.
Moyes acknowledged that Bowen getting back into goal-scoring form improves his chances of catching Southgate’s attention: “It gets him back in the goals,” said Moyes.
