Casemiro’s late goal knocks out Nottingham Forest

Manchester United has secured a spot in the FA Cup quarter-final against their long-standing rivals, Liverpool, at Old Trafford next month.

The winning goal was scored by Casemiro in the 89th minute, who expertly flicked home Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick. However, there was a delay as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed the play for a potential offside during the build-up.

In a moment of nostalgia, Sir Alex Ferguson sat alongside new United director Sir Dave Brailsford at Old Trafford. It was on this very ground that Ferguson famously won an FA Cup third-round match back in 1990 to save his job. Meanwhile, current manager Erik ten Hag is under immense pressure and sees this cup run as his last chance to mark his second season with a trophy.

Nottingham Forest put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell short against Manchester United. Despite appearing destined for extra time, Forest struggled to capitalize on several excellent scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Forest had aspirations of reaching the quarter-finals for only the second time since 1996 but were unable to consistently threaten their opponents’ defense. Divock Origi and Taiwo Awoniyi both had decent attempts on goal saved by Manchester United keeper Andre Onana.

Casemiro’s fifth goal of the season proved to be sufficient for their success. However, with Harry Maguire sidelined due to a suspected knee injury, Manchester United will need to improve significantly for their upcoming match against Manchester City. It is worth mentioning that Manchester City defeated them in last year’s FA Cup final. Ten Hag, speaking on BBC Match of the Day, emphasized their consistency by stating that they have only suffered one defeat in 2024.
