Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is recovering well after suffering a brain hemorrhage last July.
The cerebral haemorrhage happened while Van der Sar was holidaying in Croatia with his family just a month after he stepped down as chief executive of Eredivisie giants Ajax.
He was rushed to a hospital in the Netherlands via helicopter and given medical care in his homeland.
For the first time since recovering from the brain haemorrhage, Van der Sar did an interview about his health.
The 53-year-old, in an interview, said: “My health is doing well. I didn’t get much damage from it, I think. But I have never spent a day in the office from 9am to 5pm. But no, I’m fine.”
Van der Sar began his career at Ajax in 1990 before joining Juventus nine years later. In 2001, he moved to the Premier League after signing for Fulham. Then he switched to United in 2005 and went on to win multiple trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson.
After leaving Ajax in 2023, having held the post as marketing director and CEO, Van der Sar has not worked in football.
Van der Sar also revealed he’s been relaxing in the Caribbean with his wife, while joking he’s avoided former Netherlands colony Curacao as there’s “too many Dutch people.”
It was during his time at first club Ajax where he made his name, winning four Dutch titles while also being part of the famous young side that won the 1995 Champions League final against defending champions AC Milan.
It’s really great to hear that Van der Sar is recovering.
