Eliud Kipchoge wins fifth title.
World record holder Eliud Kipchoge won his fifth at the Berlin Marathon.
Kipchoge, who made his sixth appearance at the German flagship 42km contest, won in 2:02:42.
He was followed closely by Kenyan debutant marathoner Vincent Kipkemoi finished second in 02:03:12.
Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele came in third in 2:03:24. The two made their debuts in Berlin.
Kipchoge has won the Berlin Marathon races in 2022, 2017, 2018, and 2015. He finished second in 2013 when Wilson Kipsang set a then-world record 2:03.22.
He is the current holder of the marathon world record, which he had set with a finish time of 2:01:09.
Ahead of the race, Kipchoge stated that his main goal is to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals and that he believes running in Berlin is the best way to prepare for this.
Kipchoge claimed his first individual world championship title in 2003 by winning the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships and setting a world junior record over 5000 m on the track.
He is honored not only at home but also globally.
Berlin, Germany has a street named after the Kenyan icon, Eliud Kipchoge Street.
