Garcia took charge at Napoli in June after Luciano Spalletti resigned. At the same stage last term Napoli were unbeaten in Serie A, leading with 10 wins and two draws.
Mazzarri returns to Napoli for a second spell after he managed the team from 2009- 2013. He ended his debut season, 2009-2010, in sixth place before he helped Napoli qualify for the group stage of the Champions League the following campaign.
The 59-year-old departs with a 50% win rate from his 16 matches at the helm, claiming eight wins, four draws and four defeats during his ill-fated tenure.
Mazzarri’s task is to ensure Napoli are immediately more competitive in the league and ensure they get through their Champions League group.
He has been out of work since May 2022 when Cagliari sacked him when they were in the relegation zone, but he has a reasonable reputation in Italy.
The champions suffered their third league defeat of the season against Empoli on Sunday and they have now turned to former boss Mazzarri.
Mazzarri, 62, has been out of work since leaving Cagliari in 2022, having also spent time in charge of Inter Milan and Watford.
