Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has received an additional suspension and a fine of £100,000 after confessing to misconduct following his red card in the victory against Newcastle United.
The center-back was sent off in the 28th minute for fouling Alexander Isak.
Van Dijk served his ban during the Aston Villa game on September 3rd and will also miss the match against Wolves on September 16th.
Prior to exiting the field at St James’ Park, he appeared to argue with referee John Brooks.
The Dutch defender, aged 32, was also seen exchanging words with the fourth official before heading down into the tunnel.
According to a statement from The FA: “The defender admitted that he acted improperly and used offensive and derogatory language towards a match official after being shown a red card. The independent regulatory commission subsequently imposed these sanctions.”
In an Instagram post, Van Dijk stated: “I want to clarify that I fully accept the panel’s decision. This was my first red card during my time at Liverpool, and I let my frustrations get out of hand in a highly charged moment. Immediately after the game, I apologized to all of the match officials and take full responsibility.”
Howard Webb, the head of referees, has expressed his determination to ensure that officials do not ignore bad behavior from players and coaches this season. In a recent interview on Match Officials: Mic’d Up, Webb supported referee John Brooks’ decision to dismiss Virgil van Dijk.
“We believe that John Brooks correctly identified a foul,” stated Webb. “While Van Dijk did make contact with the ball, he also kicked through Alexander Isak’s foot in order to get there.”
Webb emphasized that this was not only a free-kick offense but also denied Isak an obvious opportunity to score. Therefore, it was necessary for Van Dijk to be sent off in this situation and the VAR confirmed it after reviewing the incident.
The incident occurred three minutes after Liverpool conceded Anthony Gordon’s opening goal and while they were under pressure in the game. However, Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez came off the bench later on and scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory for Liverpool.
