Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, is facing charges of improper conduct and may potentially have his one-game suspension prolonged after receiving a red card during the match against Newcastle on Sunday.
In a stunning comeback at St James’ Park, Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory in the Premier League with substitute Darwin Nunez scoring two goals. However, their triumph was marred by Van Dijk’s expulsion in the first half.
Referee John Brooks deemed Van Dijk guilty of fouling Alexander Isak on the edge of the penalty box, resulting in his sending off. The decision was confirmed by VAR.
As a consequence of this incident, there was a delay in restarting play as Van Dijk took his time leaving the field and even confronted fourth official Craig Pawson.
The specific allegation against Van Dijk is that he “acted improperly and/or used abusive and/or insulting language towards an official” following his dismissal in the 29th minute.
Van Dijk has until Friday to respond to these charges. While he will miss Liverpool’s upcoming home game against Aston Villa this Sunday due to suspension, if his ban is extended he could also be absent from their trip to Wolves on Saturday September 16.
