Diaz’s parents were abducted, with his mother quickly released, while his father was held for 12 days before being freed by guerrillas from the National Liberation Army (ELN).
Mr. Diaz, aged 58, recounted his challenging experience, involving strenuous horseback riding through mountains and enduring rain and insects. In his hometown of Barrancas in Colombia, a frail Diaz, assisted by his family, shared the difficulty of peaceful sleep during nearly 12 days of captivity.
