Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his appreciation for Chelsea counterpart Mauricio Pochettino’s influence during the early stages of his playing career.
In the 2001-02 season, Arteta went on loan to Paris St-Germain, where Pochettino was a center-back for the French club. This weekend, the two will face off in the Premier League as Arsenal hosts Chelsea at 17:30 BST.
Arteta stated, “He has been one of the most influential people in my career as a player.” He described Pochettino as a mentor and someone who cared for him like a younger brother during their time together in Paris, emphasizing Pochettino’s role in his success.
“Since that day, he has been a role model for me, not only as a player but also as a manager,” Arteta added. He expressed his gratitude for Pochettino’s impact on his career.
Arteta, aged 41, is a decade younger than Pochettino and began his managerial career in 2019 when he took over as Arsenal’s manager after serving as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
On the other hand, Pochettino entered the realm of management in 2009 with Espanyol and has also managed Southampton, Tottenham, and Paris St-Germain.
Arsenal remains undefeated in the Premier League this season and currently occupies the second position behind Tottenham on goal difference. They are set to host Chelsea, who have only won three of their first eight games and are in 11th place.
Arteta confirmed that Bukayo Saka, a forward who has scored four league goals this season, is available to play despite missing the 1-0 victory over Manchester City in Arsenal’s last match and subsequently withdrawing from England duty due to a hamstring issue.
Arteta stated, “I’m sure he wants to play, yes. I don’t see any player who doesn’t want to be in the starting 11.”
