In a stunning second-half performance, Newcastle secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, thanks to Aleksander Isak’s goal.
As a result, last season’s finalists advanced to the fourth round and will now face Manchester United.
During the first 45 minutes at St James’ Park, Newcastle found themselves mostly on the defensive as City dominated both possession and territory. The visitors came close to scoring when Julian Alvarez’s shot was blocked by Nick Pope’s outstretched foot.
However, Newcastle gained confidence from a late chance created by Jacob Murphy just before halftime. With an attacking mindset reinforced through a double substitution at the interval, they emerged for the second half with renewed vigor. It took only eight minutes for Isak to find the back of the net and give his team the lead.
When these two sides met in August in Premier League action, Manchester City appeared far superior. However, with substantial changes made by both teams for this cup tie, City failed to replicate their early dominance.

Jack Grealish attempted a long-range shot, but it posed little threat. However, Tino Livramento, making his first start, showcased his excellence by executing a fine tackle on Matheus Nunes inside the penalty area towards the end of the game. Rico Lewis also came close to scoring with a low drive that narrowly missed its target.
This outcome signifies Manchester City’s early exit from a cup competition for the third consecutive season. There was once a time when they dominated this tournament, winning four editions in succession between 2018 and 2021.
On the other hand, Newcastle tasted victory against Manchester City for the first time in 11 encounters. This win allows them to dream of reaching Wembley again; however, they will have to defeat last year’s finalists and their conquerors – Manchester United – if they want to surpass their previous achievement. The match is scheduled during the week of October 30th.
