Napoli’s forward, Victor Osimhen, expressed his unwavering affection for the club and appealed for unity among its supporters.
The Serie A team faced backlash after posting a TikTok video that seemed to ridicule the Nigerian player for his missed penalty last week. However, they clarified that there was no intention to offend the 24-year-old.
The video featured a voice imitating Osimhen saying “gimme penalty please.” Following his goal in Napoli’s 4-0 victory against Lecce on Saturday, Osimhen once again emphasized his love for the club through an Instagram post.
“Coming to the city of Naples in 2020 was a wonderful decision for me,” said Osimhen.
“I have a lot of friends who are Neapolitans and have become part of my family and everyday life. I appreciate Nigerians and everyone for lending their voices to support and reach out to me.
“Let’s continue to spread unity, respect and understanding. Forza Napoli Sempre.”
The agent of Osimhen has issued a threat of legal action against the club due to a deleted post. Despite this incident, manager Rudi Garcia has expressed his complete dedication to the Serie A club. In response, Nigeria’s Sports Minister John Owan Enoh stated that diplomatic channels with Italy are being pursued regarding the matter. He emphasized that the Nigerian government prioritizes safeguarding its athletes’ well-being and ensuring they receive proper respect and protection from any injustices.
Osimhen’s pivotal role in Napoli’s success cannot be understated. His transfer to the club in 2020 for a record-breaking fee of 81.3 million euros (£70m) proved worthwhile as he played an instrumental part in their first Serie A title win in 33 years last season, scoring an impressive tally of 26 goals in just 32 league matches.
